Real Change, Real People
“Now I feel hopeful for the future and I am in awe of how many connections and how much knowledge I have gained just from being a part of the WITPGH community and attending various events.”
As of today we have served women from war-torn countries, those who are experiencing domestic violence, and those who face unique challenges because of their race, culture, gender, socioeconomic barriers, family obligations, and general life hardships.
WITPGH is not just a community or upskilling program. It is a comprehensive means to reinvent the systems and frameworks that never had women in mind in the first place.
Our Story
2016
Struggling to find a job and benefits, Alison stumbles on a social media post featuring women with similar life experiences and non-traditional backgrounds transitioning into tech through something called a ‘coding bootcamp.’ She uses the last of her savings to enroll and take a chance, landing a job as a developer a few months later.
2017
She continuously finds herself as the only woman in tech spaces, encountering experiences that make the environment feel unsafe. Seeking community, she starts a blog called Women In Tech PGH to highlight other women and their accomplishments, expand her network, and create awareness of different domains in the industry.
2018
As she continues to explore spaces for women in tech, she realizes that joy, value, purpose, and necessary supports are an afterthought. She begins to curate her own events under the brand that focus on wellbeing, personal branding, creativity, and emerging technologies; hosting the first tech events in the city that cater to non-alcoholic networking, yoga targeted for desk-workers, and learning opportunities to harness the power of social media to pivot your career.
2019
Women In Tech PGH begins to morph into an agency. It focuses on social impact and changing the systems that often don’t consider women’s intersectional lived-experiences in their implementation of genuinely transformative professional development designs.
2020-2022
Women In Tech PGH pivots from an LLC to an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit to meet demand and launches the first holistic tech bootcamps by women for women: Hacking Barriers to Entry and The Come Up.
2023
WITPGH receives Build Back Better support from the President of the United States and launches the PEER Fellowship with The Equity | Impact Center, Carnegie Mellon University, and InnovatePGH. They are accepted into the Full Circle Nonprofit Leadership cohort and get to pitch their story at Google. They facilitate two new programs: PPG Tech Up Scholarship and a Product Management Sprinternship.
2024
WITPGH rebrands with a new mission to sustainably redefine professional development for the modern day tech workforce and is accepted as an inaugural member of the Equity Impact Center Institute.
