Pittsburgh, PA - On October 2nd, Women In Tech PGH (WITPGH) hosted a distinguished group of guests from the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) for an engaging roundtable discussion on leadership, mentorship, and advancing women in professional and social roles. The event provided an opportunity to explore emerging trends in leadership training, strategies for promoting women's retention and advancement in the workplace, and ways to empower participants to strengthen mentorship initiatives within their fields.

Facilitated and designed by Alison Falk, the roundtable discussion brought together diverse perspectives on key topics such as the essential qualities of effective mentors in political and social leadership, navigating cultural and regional challenges in mentorship, and the types of support mentors need to thrive and sustain successful relationships within the specific cultural and regional contexts of their mentorship.

Delegates reflect on key qualities of mentors for social and political leadership.

Participants also navigated how to define and measure success in social and political mentorship programs, drawing from collective experiences and WITPGH’s current research initiatives, to build more effective and inclusive mentorship models. The roundtable served as a platform for cross-cultural exchange, enabling a deeper understanding of how proper mentorship can drive equitable leadership opportunities for women in various sectors.

This roundtable represented an important step toward fostering a global dialogue on how mentorship can act as a catalyst for women’s advancement,” said Falk. “We created an intentional space for women from international backgrounds to share their stories, learn from each other, and develop actionable goals that can be applied to their own mentorship initiatives.

International delegate attendees included experts from Chad, Iraq, Jordan, Libya, Palestine, Qatar, and Tunisia. This engagement is part of broader efforts by the U.S. to support the foreign policy goals of the United States, facilitated nationally by American Councils for International Education, and locally by GlobalPittsburgh.
